A DIY SOS
In May this year, SSL Access’ Director, Marc Barry, responded to a request to improve the home life of a young woman and her family. We’d like to share the part that we played in this moving home improvement story—a BBC DIY SOS story.
We put our resources at the disposal a family in Newton Mearns and their project. Marc simply asked, “how can we help?”
At Stairlifts Scotland, we offer mobility solutions for people of all ages and ability to navigate safely through their homes. Comfort and dignity are our number one priorities. The young woman was living in a house not suited to her needs. She used a wheelchair due to a condition she had lived with since birth that affected her limbs and joints.
With her restricted mobility, she could not access her own toilet and shower. This meant she had to rely on her dad for all her sanitary needs. This situation would be difficult at any age, but as she enters her teenage years, it could not continue.
The Solution
Our Commercial Manager, David Nelson, conducted an in person survey to assess her needs. Our qualified engineering team proposed a series of bespoke Likorall 242 overhead lift systems to safely transport the young woman around her house. We also delivered an Osprey 500 Self Propelled Shower Chair. This would give her independence and privacy when showering and toileting.
The lift system could move her from her bed to her shower chair and from her chair to her changing unit (also supplied by our friends at Osprey). It also enabled her to use her couch in the living room. This allowed her to spend quality time with her family again and in comfort. We installed the system., customised to her needs. Using a traverse hoist, it gave her back the freedom of movement in her home at the touch of a button.
Within two days, our technical manager, James, along with two of our engineers, Brian and Steven, installed the lift system. We also delivered the shower chair and changing unit to her house.
